Study Source B. Is Source B an accurate depiction of life during the Japanese Occupation (JO)?
L1 Describing JO without making any reference to source [1] OR Answers based on Provenance
L2 Answers based on typicality OR Answers based on Content [2] e.g.: No, one source is not enough for me to trust whether the information is reliable. It is only one man’s opinion. etc OR Life under the Japanese was terrible as there was a great shortage of food and diseases were rampant. Life was grim as pointed out in the source ‘The shortage of rice became increasingly acute.’
L3 Answers that cross-refer to other sources and/ or Contextual knowledge (CK) [3-4] Award 3m for cross reference to one source/CK. Award additional mark for additional detail/explanation up to a max of 4m e.g. Yes, life under the Japanese was terrible as there was a great shortage of food and diseases were rampant. Life was grim (inference) as pointed out in the source ‘The shortage of rice became increasingly acute.(evidence)’ This fact is supported by my contextual knowledge that the Japanese carried out food rationing and thus subjected the people to a very tough life etc.
L4 Question the source AND purpose [5-6] Eventhough life under the Japanese seemed terrible L3+ However, I do not believe the entire source as the writer seems to exaggerate the account. The statement ‘Dogs and cats began to disappear from the streets!’ is a little too far fetched, where the writer is trying to make us assume that they were really helpless till the degree of eating animals. But since, there was no edible food, animals would die too and thus this statement is not reliable. I also do not completely support ‘The entire supply had been commandeered by the Japanese authorities for their own use.’ This is true but this also makes us assume that the Japanese were really heartless and inhumane as they left non edible food. But based on my contextual knowledge, I know that the Japanese implemented the usage of banana notes and started rationing exercises, when they used our supply. Even though this was not sufficient or too expensive to buy, they still had food for consumption. This statement ‘The entire supply had been commandeered by the Japanese authorities for their own use’ is not clear in explanation.
Based on my contextual knowledge, it is true that ‘Bread was now made from tapioca, corn and sago flour.’ They were really hard, and tough, from ‘Now hard as bricks.’ I find that he is very explicit, detailed and thus find that he has a purpose. I think he wants to educate the readers about the tragic living conditions they faced/experienced. Although the source does not lack some facts, I find that the source is greatly exaggerated, so it is not completely reliable.
